INFORMATION CENTER
WHAT IS SOFT TISSUE THERAPY?
Soft Tissue Therapy is the management, manipulation and rehabilitation of soft tissues of the body including muscles, tendons and ligaments. It is applicable not just to sports people but to anybody wishing to guard against or recover from a soft tissue injury.
HOW DOES SOFT TISSUE THERAPY WORK?
When there is chronic muscle tension or injury the body handles this in the only way it knows how. It forms a layer of very dense, very sticky fibrous adhesions (or scar tissue). Scar tissue is poorly vascularised and less elastic than muscles. These adhesions block circulation and cause pain, limited strength and movement and cause inflammation. Through treatment we will look to break down these adhesions to relieve pain and restore normal movement.

A course of treatment is normally recommended to completely remove all layers of fibrous adhesions and restore normal joint patterns
WHAT TECHNIQUES DO YOU USE TO TREAT SOFT TISSUE?
The techniques used will be largely dependant on the clients needs
Some of the techniques used could include;
Effleurage; which involves the horizontal stroking of soft tissue, with strokes being provided pushing fluid towards the main lymph nodes. The therapist will vary the Pressure, speed, rhythm and direction of the strokes used
Petrissage; which involves the kneading of soft tissues, which are effectively lifted, rolled and squeezed or pressed to stretch and manipulate them
Frictions; which involves the exertion of controlled pressure, usually on a small surface area, with the tissues being moved back and fourth along with the underlying area.
Tapotement; which involves the rhythmic tapping or percussion of the soft tissues, with a view to stimulate rather than relax the client.
